In this article, we’ll walk you through setting up Auto Rotations in minutes, ensuring your team’s on-call responsibilities are balanced and hassle-free.
If you’ve ever been responsible for scheduling on-call shifts, you know how frustrating it can be to keep things balanced. Some people get overloaded, others barely take any shifts, and when team sizes change, the whole system falls apart.
On-call should be fair, transparent, and—most importantly—not a nightmare to manage. That’s exactly why we built Auto Rotations in All Quiet.
In this article, we’ll show you how to set up a fully automated on-call rotation that adapts to team changes, ensures fair distribution of shifts, and eliminates the hassle of manual scheduling.
The Solution – Set Up an Auto-Rotation for Your Team
The best way to understand how Auto Rotations work? A real-world example. Below, we’ll walk you through setting up an automated weekly rotation for a five-person team. Still have questions? No problem — shoot me a message anytime.
Step 1 – Add an Auto-Rotation to Your Schedule
First, head to your team’s Schedule & Escalations section. At the top right of your schedule, you’ll see a label displaying the current rotation settings (by default, it’s set to No Rotation).
Click on it to open the rotation settings dialogue and configure your rotation.

Step 2 – Define How Often Rotations Should Happen
Next, decide how often your on-call shifts should rotate. You can choose from:
✅ Daily
✅ Weekly
✅ Biweekly
✅ Monthly
✅ Custom
For our example, we’ll set weekly rotations.

Step 3 – Choose Your Rotation Mode: Explicit vs. Auto
At this point, you’ll need to select how your rotation should work. All Quiet offers two modes:
🔹 Explicit Rotations – You manually define rotation groups.
🔹 Auto Rotations – All team members are automatically included in a fair rotation without manually assigning groups.
We’ll focus on Auto Rotations, which ensures everyone shares the on-call load fairly — without extra admin work.
Step 4 – Configure Your Auto-Rotation
Now, let’s configure our rotation:
1️⃣ Select “Auto” as your rotation mode. This ensures shifts rotate automatically without manual adjustments.
2️⃣ We've already decided for weekly rotations, and additionally set a Handoff Day & Time. We’ll select Monday at midnight to keep a clean weekly cycle.
3️⃣ Define your “Auto Rotation Group Size.” This determines how many people should be on-call at the same time. In our case, we want two engineers on-call each week.
4️⃣ Here, we add an "Effective from" date, making the schedule start this week.
5️⃣ Click “Save Rotation” to activate your changes.

Step 5 – How Auto Rotations Distribute On-Call Shifts
Once activated, Auto Rotations will automatically cycle through team members in pairs each week. Here’s how it works for a five-person team:
✅ Week 1: Sandra (1) & Nick (2)
✅ Week 2: Til (3) & Mads (4)
✅ Week 3: Svenja (5) & Sandra (1)
✅ Week 4: Nick (2) & Til (3)
✅ Week 5: Mads (4) & Svenja (5)
…and so on, ensuring fair coverage without manual intervention.

Bonus – Auto Rotations Adapt to Team Changes
One of the biggest advantages of Auto Rotations? They adapt dynamically:
🔹 New members? They’re automatically added to the rotation.
🔹 Someone leaves? The system redistributes shifts without gaps.
This means your on-call schedule stays balanced — even when your team evolves.
Final Thoughts
With Auto Rotations, you no longer have to manually shuffle shifts or worry about unfair schedules. Justset it up once, and All Quiet will keep things running smoothly — automatically.
If your team struggles with on-call fatigue, unfair workloads, or schedule chaos, this simple tweak can make a huge difference.
💡Take a moment to review your current rotation setup. Could Auto Rotations help your team stay balanced, focused, and stress-free? If so, give it a try today!
